The National Weather Service (NWS) issued an updated wind advisory on Sunday at 4:15 a.m., covering the Western Mojave Desert, Eastern Mojave Desert, including the Mojave National Preserve, Morongo Basin, Cadiz Basin, and the Las Vegas Valley. This advisory is scheduled to remain in effect until Monday, October 12, at 5 a.m.
The NWS Las Vegas NV anticipates south winds ranging from 20 to 30 miles per hour, with stronger gusts expected to reach speeds between 45 and 55 miles per hour. According to the NWS, these gusty conditions could displace unsecured outdoor items, potentially cause tree limbs to fall, and may result in a few localized power outages.
Motorists are advised that winds of this magnitude can make driving challenging, especially for high-profile vehicles. The NWS recommends exercising extra caution when traveling during this period.
Staying informed about high wind alerts is essential. The NWS categorizes these alerts into three distinct levels, each indicating a different degree of risk and recommended actions:
**High wind warning:** This alert signifies that sustained, strong winds are currently occurring, accompanied by even stronger gusts. When a High wind warning is in effect, individuals should seek shelter. For those driving, it is advised to keep both hands on the steering wheel and reduce speed.
**Wind advisory:** This is the current alert level for the affected regions. It indicates that strong winds are occurring, but they are not severe enough to warrant a High wind warning. During a Wind advisory, outdoor objects should be secured, and caution should be exercised if driving.
**High wind watch:** This alert is issued when sustained, strong winds are possible in the forecast. In such instances, individuals should secure any loose outdoor items and adjust their plans as necessary to avoid being caught outside during the anticipated strong winds.
To prepare before strong winds approach, the NWS guidance within these alert levels suggests securing outdoor items and adjusting travel plans if a High wind watch is in place, and taking caution while driving and securing objects once a Wind advisory or High wind warning is active. Staying aware of current conditions and official advisories helps ensure safety during windy periods.
