A California man was arrested last week in western Arizona in connection with the use of counterfeit currency, authorities reported. The Mohave County Sheriff’s Office identified the individual as Michael Shawn Wedge, 40, from Needles, California. His apprehension is linked to an ongoing investigation into fake currency circulating within the region, impacting communities across the river corridor.

At the time of his arrest, Wedge was found in possession of seven counterfeit $100 bills. His custody followed authorities successfully locating his vehicle, which was a critical development in the investigative process. This operation was part of broader law enforcement efforts across western Arizona.

The investigation involved a collaborative effort between multiple agencies. MCSO spokesperson Anita Mortensen stated that investigators, working with the Bullhead City Police Department, were able to obtain surveillance footage. This crucial evidence helped in identifying Wedge and the vehicle associated with the counterfeit currency incidents, solidifying the leads developed by local law enforcement.

The scope of the investigation extended into California, where the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department provided assistance. A search warrant was executed at Wedge’s residence in Needles. During the search, authorities uncovered significant evidence indicative of counterfeit currency production, suggesting a broader operation than initial incidents. In addition to the evidence related to the fake money, a stolen motorcycle was also discovered at the property, adding to the severity of the charges.

Following his arrest and the findings from the comprehensive investigation, Wedge was booked into jail. He faces multiple specific charges, including three counts of forgery, two counts of fraud, and one count of driving on a suspended license. Mortensen further elaborated on the impact of the arrest, confirming that the investigation led to the resolution and closure of six active cases for the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office. She added that Wedge was "identified further as a suspect in at least two additional cases through the Bullhead City Police Department," indicating the breadth of his alleged activities.

Law enforcement officials believe there could be more individuals who have been victimized by the counterfeit currency scheme in the broader Bullhead City and Mohave Valley area. Investigators are actively encouraging anyone who believes they may have been a victim, or who possesses relevant information pertaining to the case, to contact authorities immediately. The Mohave County Sheriff's Office provided a contact number, 928-753-0753, for individuals to call with their tips or to report potential connections to the ongoing investigation, helping ensure all affected parties are identified.
